In Chappaqua, First Potluck for the Clintons

IT was billed as a potluck supper to meet the new neighbors. That the neighbors in question were President Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton and their daughter, Chelsea, lent the evening considerably more cache than the usual Saturday night get-together.

The Clintons, who moved into their house here last month, arrived at the party in a sports utility vehicle, bearing a chicken and rice casserole. Dressed casually in sweaters and slacks, the first family mingled with about 100 guests at a private home about a mile from their own.

The purpose of the party, which was held on the eve of Mrs. Clinton’s Senate campaign announcement, was to introduce the Clintons to their new community, said Joanne Georgiou, the Realtor who had shown the Clintons their house. Those invited included community leaders like the chief of police, the town justices, the town board, the head of the Chamber of Commerce and local clergy members as well as nearby neighbors.
