Woes of Care at County Jail

Valhalla – OVER the years, Barry Hendricks has sought fairly age-appropriate medical attention. He is approaching 50 now, and suffered from kidney stones not long ago. He had an operation for a hernia. He needed dental work. His eyesight deteriorated and he required reading glasses.

What is less typical about his treatment is where he received it: inside the walls of the Westchester County Jail. Mr. Hendricks, who is from Yonkers, says he has been convicted 52 times for possession of stolen property and has been in and out of prison since he was 16. While the frequency of his arrests is unusual, the course of his medical care as an inmate is fairly characteristic.

And Rocco Pozzi, commissioner of Westchester’s Department of Correction, wants to keep it that way, for many reasons –chief among them, prison security.
