Arwen Sheridan felt terrible. She had a sore throat, swollen glands and a fever that came and went for weeks.
“Even brushing my hair hurt,” she said.
A student at George Washington University in the District of Columbia, Ms. Sheridan visited the campus health center, where she was tested for strep throat, given Tylenol and told to return in a week if she did not feel better. The health center could not offer her an overnight bed because, like a growing number of colleges, George Washington does not have a 24-hour infirmary.
Instead, Ms. Sheridan returned to her dorm, languished in bed and dragged herself to midterm exams until a roommate took her to the hospital, where mononucleosis was diagnosed. A few days later she went home to Delaware for spring break.
