SHOULD a freshman have a credit card? How should you react to the arrival of huge bundles of laundry? What do you store and what do you ship home at the end of the school year?
A cottage industry has sprung up to help parents deal with the questions that come with their children’s college years.
Many colleges have newsletters and Web sites created specifically for parents, featuring academic schedules, family weekend information, campus resources, links to the campus newspaper and advice (one University of Vermont column is called “My View From the Helicopter”).
Parents even have their own national advocacy group, the College Parents of America (collegeparents.org). The organization addresses policy issues like the tax deductibility of tuition, strengthening federal student loan programs, and the amount an individual can receive through a Pell grant.
