Valhalla – I’VE been going through Bill Clinton withdrawal lately. Sure, he left a message on my answering machine around election time. “This is Bill Clinton,” he said, in those familiar Arkansas cadences. “Today I want to talk to you as a neighbor.” He went on to tell me that he and Hillary loved living in Westchester and how we ought to vote.
But where was my neighbor now? Not at Lange’s deli, not at Starbucks or at any other of his Chappaqua haunts. Oh, sure, he had been in Israel earlier this month, accompanying his wife on a brief tour. And, yes, he had been in Jordan, visiting with survivors after the terrorist attack there. Important international missions both, but when Mr. Clinton showed up on Long Island for a conference on his presidency at Hofstra University, I started to get put out.
Long Island?
The Mideast is one thing, but if he loves Westchester so much, why doesn’t the former president come home and speak to us?
